Diaper or work of art

So I made a diaper yesterday that did not turn out the way I hoped.  I could go on and on and tell you all the problems with it, but basically I hurried through something that I didn't know anything about.  After learning from my mistakes and watching a youtube tutorial on working with fold over elastic, I decided to try again.  It encouraged me so much that Jama from Cool People Sew said it took her several times to get her diapers just right.  And she already knows how to sew!  I used the pattern in Cloth Diapers Made Easy, part of the new Babyville Boutique line that JoAnn's just started carrying.  The pul comes in packages of three cute prints for 14.99, but I've learned that no one ever pays full-price for anything at JoAnn's.  I have a stash of 40-50% off one item coupons that I take with me each time : ).  They have fold over elastic and hook and loop closures in coordinating colors, too.

Here it is- my very own homemade all-in-one diaper.

JoAnn's doesn't have micro-fleece, so I bought some coordinating flannel.
I plan on ordering micro-fleece for future diapers.

I like the way Bumgenius all-in-ones have the absorptive insert sewn in, but also
have a pocket for faster drying and in case you want to add an extra soaker.  For the insert,
I used a contoured cotton insert from Rumparooz (I have lots of these) on top and matched it
up with a 2-layer hemp flat on the bottom.

I know this post is about the diaper, but isn't that little boy cute?

Well, what do you think?  I think I'm going to go get started on another one.

  1. Nice job and it doesn't even look like a bulky cloth diaper!

  2. Whoohoo!! I KNEW you would be sewing diapers before long. :) I agree, sewing FOE is something that comes with practice. I have to hold my mouth the "right" way. Haha. My first results were disasterous. Now I have lots of experience and it's no big deal, but I still remember the frustrations in the beginning. Do you have a 3-step zigzag stitch on your sewing machine? It is like the zigzag, only it breaks the zig and zag down into multiple stitches. I have found it is the best way to sew down the FOE. You will have to consider joining the yahoo group sewitseams for the BEST microfleece. I just bought one of those 3-packs of PUL at Joann's with my 40% off coupon on Saturday. It is so cute. I have no idea when I will ever have time to sew though. ;)

I'm an on-the-run mom to 6 kids who studied and taught exercise science in a previous life. I love all things running, nutrition, and health-related. I usually run at zero dark thirty in the morning and am often quite hungry before, during, and after my run, but I live a rich, full, blessed life with my children, family, and friends. My faith in God is my anchor, and looking to Him and His promises allows me to live fully even when life circumstances are difficult. While running gives me an appetite, my desire is to hunger and thirst for righteousness more than for physical food.
