Preparing for Worship

I love to read! One of the books I've been reading lately is Parenting in the Pew by Robbie Castleman. This is something I desperately want to learn to do!

Here's one of my favorite quotes from the book thus far:

"Parenting in the pew begins with an attitude check. Are you eager or going through the motions? Are your profoundly grateful for the saving work of Christ on the cross, or are you religious by habit or culture? Are you more conscious of how God sees you in worship than how others see you in church? Is worship time priority time? Do you talk about preparations for worship during the week?" p.44

Wow, time for a paradigm shift. We did start reciting Psalms in the car on our way to church a few months ago, but I see now that we have a long way to go.

Why is it my kids always forget to brush their teeth on Sundays and fail to remember until we're in the car driving to church? Why does it seem like our house is littered with Bibles all week long and then when Sunday morning rolls around nobody can find one? Why does it never fail that on Sunday morning Measle realizes that she's left her church shoes at Nanna's?

Yes, an attitude check and a little better planning ahead are definitely in order! I've often said how comforted I am that while man looks on the outer appearance, God looks on the heart. Maybe that's not as comforting as I thought. What does my heart look like when I get to church on Sunday morning?

How about you?

  1. We are always looking for shoes & Bibles too!! And more then once I've heard the "Mom I forgot to brush my teeth" from the back seat! I've always attributed it to us having 5 kiddos? But after reading this I wonder.....I will be reading this book in the near future. Thank you :)

I'm an on-the-run mom to 6 kids who studied and taught exercise science in a previous life. I love all things running, nutrition, and health-related. I usually run at zero dark thirty in the morning and am often quite hungry before, during, and after my run, but I live a rich, full, blessed life with my children, family, and friends. My faith in God is my anchor, and looking to Him and His promises allows me to live fully even when life circumstances are difficult. While running gives me an appetite, my desire is to hunger and thirst for righteousness more than for physical food.
